Varicose Veins are twisted and swollen vein in the legs, that lie just underneath the skin. They may be red, blue and purple in color. Veins contain one-way valves to ensure that the blood flows towards the heart. If the valves are weak or damaged, blood can backup and overload the pressure on the veins. This excess pressure created causes widening of veins leading to varicose veins.
What happens during the treatment?
An ultrasound machine, vascular catheter, radiofrequency electrode, and console are used in the procedure of this laser treatment. Topical anaesthetic cream is used to minimise the discomfort. The physician will numb the area from which the catheter will enter. Ultrasound is used to develop an image of the varicose vein and to track the path of the catheter. A laser fibre or an electrode is extended to the desired location of the vein. The laser is then applied, resulting in heating of the veins. As a result, the vein will shrink and collapse.
What after the surgery?
After the procedure is over, a follow-up ultrasound is required to examine the treated vein and adverse effects, if any. The vein usually takes a week to close completely. The daily activities can be resumed immediately after the procedure is over, except travelling in airways. The patient is recommended to remain active, and avoid sitting for long hours.
What causes varicose veins?
Every person’s veins have valves in them. These valves ensure that blood flows from the feet back to the heart against gravity. Without these valves, the effect of gravity would make the blood stagnate in the legs.
In some people these valves are weak. Pregnancy, weight gain, and the simple effects of ageing can aggravate this weakness. Another reason for varicose veins can be employment that requires long periods of standing or sitting – it can also worsen varicose veins symptoms over time. In Pune, this is often a common contributing cause.
Healthy valves allow blood to flow in one direction only. When veins aren’t functioning properly, the blood flows backward, causing strain and damage, resulting in varicose veins.
